Common Furnace and Heating Problems
How does your gas furnace work?
The gas furnace is an appliance looking like a large box that does the following: takes in cold air cleans it with an air filter heats it up with a gas burner using a stainless steel heat exchanger distributes the warm air with a blower motor through your home's ductwork. The heated air then cools down in your home's various rooms and returns to the furnace through return air grills and ductwork.
The cold returning air enters back through the air filter into the furnace to complete another heating loop.
There may be a humidifier mounted on the furnace or the return air ductwork. Once in a while things don't work quite right and you need to troubleshoot a gas furnace repair or relight the pilot if it has one. Most newer furnaces have electronic ignitions and need special troubleshooting.
Why your home’s furnace or heating system may need to be repaired, there are a few reasons that are quite common:
Thermostat malfunctions and dirty filters: causing no heat, fan, or comfort problems. A faulty thermostat can make the furnace cycle go on and off frequently. If the room temperature seems to go up and down often, you may need to adjust the heat anticipator.
Air flow problems from fan motors, belts and bearings, causing furnace overheating or poor heating control.
Furnace or heating system pilots or ignition control problems, switches and fuses: Your furnace may not be not heating sufficiently resulting in intermittent or no heat. Check to see if the thermostat is set properly and if anything is blocking the warm airflow. If the pilot light does not light or remain lit, check the thermocouple to see if it is positioned properly in the pilot flame. Check that the power switch is on. If it is on, check the master switch and circuit breaker or fuse. There's a possibility that the electrical system may have overloaded. If there is no circuit breaker trip or a blown fuse, the problem may be with a faulty thermostat.

Below is a list of possible causes and observations to make:
- Gas is shut off
- Loose or defective thermocouple
- Defective gas valve
- Cracked heat exchangers
- Does the pilot light keep going out?
- Thermostat malfunction
- Tripped circuit breaker
- Blown fuse
- Pilot light gone out -low pressure or blocked orifice
- Furnace not generating heat
- Temperature swings
- Blower problems
- Thermostat (set point higher than room temperature?)
- Is the emergency switch on?
- Is the fuse blown or the circuit breaker tripped?
- Is the fuel supply "on"?
- Is the pilot light lit ? Are you out of oil?
- Is the filter clean?
- Is there a reset button on furnace? If so, reset it.
- Are the supply registers open?
- Is the return vent(s) unobstructed?
Remove all flammable objects from around your furnace and water heater. Boxes, clothes, paints, aerosols, gasoline should not be stored in this area. If the furnace and water heater are in an enclosed room or closet, be sure there is plenty of air for combustion.
